Nestled on Jamaica’s northeast coast is the Parish of Portland, with awe-inspiring and mountainous rain-forests.
This side of Jamaica is just overflowing with choices for the nature lover searching for a more laid-back vibe. You may need to book some extra days if you really need the relaxation and downtime.
There are grand rivers, waterfalls, mountains, lush rainforests, epic coastlines and picturesque beaches!
I’ve been visiting Jamaica, since I was a child and that’s because my parents are both from Jamaica.
The funny thing is, when I got older and started driving in Jamaica I began introducing my parents to parts of Jamaica they had never seen before.
Portland was one of the areas that we spent several occasions visiting and we created many endearing memories even more sentimental to me now that my father has passed away.
One thing is for sure, if you want to create some lasting memories that will always bring a smile to your face and warmth to your soul, you should take the time to explore this picturesque part of Jamaica.

My family and I once took a trip when we all stayed together at Goblin Hill Villas, just east of Port Antonio. It was during this trip where I captured the photo below.

I believe at the time of our trip the Rio Grande’s depth was more shallow than normal, so we did not go that far up the river but we were able to stop for a swim.

The conditions are not very organized, but I guarantee you, catching a few sloppy waves, and later grabbing a cold beer with some spicy Conch soup and Jerk Chicken would be a day you’d never forget.
